Builder’s Club- Builder’s Club will be holding a winter dance on Tuesday, January 26th. Anyone in Jr. High can come to the dance. It will start at 6:30 pm and will end at 8 pm. There will be drinks and snacks for everyone to enjoy. Builder’s Club members are still doing the concession stand and clean-up at some home basketball games. If you show up to work, you can get credit points to win an award at the end of the year. We are still planning on going ice skating with the money we raise this year.

STUCO- Jr. High Student Council had a meeting on Jan. 13. One of the topics they covered was dances. The most recent dance STUCO held was the Halloween dance. They said it went GREAT but they had way too much food. STUCO plans on holding another dance later on in the year. They also talked about getting clocks in all of the hallways. This should prevent students from getting anymore tardies. Another subject that the student council talked about was updating the signs coming into town. The letters on the sign are too small that people can barely read it coming into town. Other organizations have talked about doing this, so Jr. High STUCO is trying to help. The last topic, and probably the most important, was about the state budget. The Kansas Government wants to increase sales tax 1 cent and increase tobacco tax. This may not sound like much, but it will eventually add up to billions of dollars. This extra money will go to schools around the state.

The Clubs

8th Girls MCEL Basketball

The 8th grade girls competed in the 2010 MCEL basketball tournament on January 9, 2010. Going into the tournament they were 9-1, where they matched up against their first opponent, Hill City, who was seeded 7th with a record of 3-5. The Lady Red narrowly defeated the Broncos 28-25, with Lynzee Mace as the leading scorer with a total of eight points, followed by Alyssa Hobelmann and Colbie Decker each with five.  The Lady Red then moved on to their next opponent, Trego.

In the semi-finals of the MCEL tournament the Lady Red met up the Trego Eagles, who were the 6th seed, with a record of 3-5. With the first half being an intense battle, the Lady Red pulled away during the third quarter and ended up defeating the Eagles with a score of 33-15. Colbie Decker dominated the scoring charts with fifteen points, followed by Jordan Baxter and Lynzee Mace who each had six points. That win took the Lady Red into the finals of the tournament.

The championship game of the league tournament was played on the following Thursday, January 14, 2010. Smith Center’s opponent was the undefeated Osborne Bullpups. The Lady Red had played them once before, the first game of the year. Osborne took a big lead on the Lady Red with a score of 21-6 at half. Coming out after half, the Lady Red knew it wasn’t over yet. They came back and played a great second half out scoring the Bullpups, 22-12. The Bullpups narrowly defeated the Lady Red with a score of 36-29. At the league tournament, during the second match up, the Lady Red knew it would be a different game this time. Going into half of the championship game the Bullpups were only leading the Lady Red, 14-6. The Lady Red pushed their selves as hard as they could, but in the end it just wasn’t enough. The Osborne Bullpups defeated the Lady Red 24-32. Kaitlin Albert was the leading scorer of the game with eight, followed by Colbie Decker who had six. Coach Sasse and Coach Terrill said that they were proud of the Lady Red’s effort, and were proud of the way they held themselves together after the game and during the awards ceremony.
